Stone Tables

Infinite Doors - Kurt Hoffmann (1.4.1)

Kurt Hoffmann

Honing my canvas ( making smooth the surface of the stone ) is first part of making the tablet. I achieve that by grinding on the stone with a diamond cup wheel. Making circular passes over the surface. The idea is take out all high point and low point, but at the same time you have to make the surface flat and not rolling. Rolling is a natural hone and not the same as a full hone ,witch is what I bring my surface too.

Designing this piece. I use the patterns in the stone and cut the shape as a twisted 3D platform for my inlay. I then draw out by hand the redrawing that I made when I first created the piece in my head.

After step two I cut out the shape in the stone. Then chisel the stone out from between the line cuts. After that I blend my colors of masonry to my desired tone. Floating the color into the areas that I intend to fill with it. It then has to cure for 4-5 days. Then sand out the surface again, but with silicarbon cup wheel to preferred grit. A few more trade secret steps and she is good to go.
